WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG DISPLAYS RESOURCE-GUARDING BEHAVIOUR; it is important to take action to prevent it from worsening. Repeated behaviour reinforces it, making it more likely to continue. Consider seeking the guidance of a qualified behaviourist recommended by your veterinarian if your dog exhibits extreme guarding behaviour.
To manage resource guarding, remove items that your dog is likely to guard. If you cannot guarantee that your dog won’t pick up items, limit access to areas where those items are present. Only allow chews and toys in designated areas, such as the garden or crate, when energy levels are low. If your dog obsessively guards a favourite toy, put it away until the behaviour is under better control.
Ensure that family members and visitors know not to approach or interrupt your dog while eating or chewing. Avoid confronting your dog if you need to remove an item they are guarding and instead exchange it for something else. Never punish or scold your dog for resource-guarding, as it may worsen their behaviour.
Teaching your dog the “leave it” cue may help you ask them to leave whatever they are guarding safely and positively. However, it’s important to remember that every dog is different, and if your dog bites or concerns you, consult a certified behaviourist for help.
Keep in mind that not all resource-guarding behaviour is fixable, and attempting to fix it could make it worse. Some pet owners live with resource-guarding behaviours as long as they don’t cause physical harm or fear.
